The grid speaks in dozens of dialects — synchrophasor frames, IEC 61850 GOOSE, SunSpec Modbus, BACnet objects, OpenADR events, Matter clusters. Observation is the layer that ingests, time-aligns, and persists every one of them, plus the vision and acoustic streams that no SCADA system was ever asked to handle.

Telemetry & metering

PMU streams over IEEE C37.118 with sub-cycle phase resolution. AMI interval data over OpenADR 3.0 and proprietary head-end APIs. SCADA over DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850. Smart inverters and BESS over IEEE 2030.5 / SunSpec CSIP with TLS + PKI. Smart panels (SPAN eBus, Schneider Square D, Lumin) over MQTT. Every reading is timestamped against a single canonical clock and persisted in a TimescaleDB hypertable.

Vision

Drone imagery from autonomous substation rounds. Fixed pole-camera streams. ROW survey imagery from utility helicopters and high-resolution satellite vendors. The platform stages frames to an object store, runs SAM 3.1 masks to extract assets, and routes the cropped imagery to a vision-language model (Qwen3-VL on the cloud edge, Pixtral on a Hailo-10H pole-mount) for structured findings — cracked insulators, vegetation encroachment, corrosion, missing hardware.

Acoustic

Edge microphones on transformers, switchgear cabinets, BESS containers, and pump rooms. YAMNet emits embeddings on-device — raw audio never leaves the perimeter — and PANNs CNN14 classifies partial discharge, corona, bearing wear, and mechanical faults against a per-asset fingerprint. The fingerprint is enrolled once at commissioning and refreshed quarterly.

Weather, market, and tariff feeds

GraphCast and ECMWF for medium-range weather. ISO/RTO LMP and capacity bid signals. Day-ahead tariff schedules and TOU tables for every meter under management. Wildfire indices and PSPS triggers from the relevant CAL FIRE and PG&E feeds where applicable. All cached locally so day-ahead optimization runs even when the upstream feed is degraded.

Buildings & end-use

BACnet for commercial BMS. Modbus RTU/TCP for industrial controllers. Matter / Thread for residential heat pumps, EV chargers, and thermostats. KNX for European buildings. The platform abstracts these into a unified Asset graph — every sensor, every actuator, every meter, every relay, with its location, owner, and authorization scope.

Standards & operational text

Standards corpora (NERC CIP, IEEE 2030.5, IEC 61850, ISO 50001, OpenADR, OCPP), customer manuals, work orders, outage post-mortems. Embedded with Gemini Embedding 2 and stored in pgvector halfvec for semantic search. The agent uses this corpus for tool-grounded reasoning when an operator asks why a relay tripped or which standard governs a proposed dispatch.
